The Main House
A Lowcountry Setting of Enjoyment and Beauty

Stately and symmetrical, the clubhouse at The Old Collier Golf Club draws on the classical heritage of early Georgian architecture. Designed by architects Shope Reno Wharton, of Greenwich, Connecticut, it evokes a Lowcountry estate home that for all appearances has stood in this location for generations. It is crafted of white-trimmed brick with a shaded veranda and surrounded by gently sloping lawns. The clubhouse reflects a balance of practical and romantic.

The interior design of the Club completes the vision. The scale is personal, evoking the comfortable elegance of a country home. Antique oak plank floors are graced with Oriental carpets and sea grass rugs. Poplar crown and baseboard moldings and wainscoting complement crystal chandeliers and silvered mirrors. A pastel palette of sage greens and shades of gold creates a restful backdrop for comfortable antique furnishings from Europe and America. The center table in the front hall is Portuguese colonial, while the surrounding chairs and sideboard are 1830’s American.

Locker rooms carry through the Colonial influence. Near the handcrafted wooden lockers are fine furnishings such as an antique English sideboard and an eighteenth century cabinet. Walls in the ladies’ card room are upholstered in custom hand printed linen. The Club’s emphasis on Southwest Florida’s natural environment is echoed in its art work. Palm trees painted on muslin line the walls in Palm Hall. Balancing exterior vistas of towering pines and lush fairways are botanical illustrations and landscapes in period frames.

Refined without pretense, The Old Collier clubhouse, according to its Charleston, South Carolina designer, Amelia Handegan, is “a building that did not try to be anything but an evolved classical house.” For members, it is a setting of enjoyment and beauty.
